Sunderland have taken to their Premier League return with poise, sitting 10th as deadline day on 2 February approaches. According to Sunderland Echo, their squad is valued at £315m, 16th in the division after significant summer spending. They look near-certs to stay up.
Regis Le Bris has shaped a robust, organised team capable of taking points off leading sides, though they have only one win in their last six league games. They have outperformed fellow promoted clubs Burnley and Leeds United.
Summer arrivals have been effective, lifting the squad’s worth. Even so, they rank 34th by squad value across Europe, underlining the Premier League’s depth. That position has left the club less desperate than most as the window nears its close.
It is a far cry from recent spells in League One and the Championship’s lower reaches. If this trajectory continues, the Stadium of Light could yet see European football in the near future.
After 23 league games, their valuation sits above four rivals and results exceed that benchmark with a comfortable mid-table position. A net spend of £122m last summer appears to be paying off, and higher finishes bring extra prize money that could lift income.
Before this campaign, Le Bris said the team would evolve, learn and struggle in a fiercely tough league, and that they would fight and see.
