Sunderland rank sixth for Premier League net spend in 2025/26 at €155.59m, behind only Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United.
The season is into its final sprint and Sunderland are 11th after a 2-1 comeback at Newcastle before the international break, a point above their rivals and three behind seventh-placed Brentford. According to Sunderland Echo, Regis Le Bris' side still have an outside chance of Europe and long ago banished relegation concerns.
Tottenham's level of spending is stark given they sit 17th, a point above the relegation zone and 13 points behind Sunderland, whom they visit next Sunday.
There are few surprises among the rest of that top five, who occupy the division's top three, with Liverpool fifth.
Chelsea posted the smallest negative net spend at €4.90m, aided by high-value departures of Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Lesley Ugochukwu.
Brentford, Brighton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth are the only sides to have made a profit this season, each selling multiple key players across the two windows.
Sunderland's strong return has been underpinned by sizeable fees for recruits such as Habib Diarra, Brian Brobbey and Chemsdine Talbi.
