Sunderland have parted company with assistant head coach Luciano Vulcano.
Sunderland Echo understands the Premier League club and Vulcano agreed to a mutual parting last week, and the club are expected to continue with their existing coaching staff.
The 37-year-old was not on the bench for Monday night’s win over Burnley at the Stadium of Light. He joined in the summer as part of Régis Le Bris’ backroom team, and his exit comes midway through his first season.
Vulcano began his career in analysis before earning UEFA coaching badges at Italy’s Coverciano school, a route he has previously attributed to hard work and good fortune.
His CV includes Inter Milan, Fiorentina and AC Milan, where he contributed to a league title-winning campaign, and he also gained UEFA Champions League experience in Italy. More recently he worked at Al Nassr, where the staff worked with Cristiano Ronaldo, before moving to Wearside.
Despite his departure, Sunderland’s coaching structure remains largely unchanged from last summer. Vulcano initially arrived alongside fellow assistant head coach Isidre Ramón Madir and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler.
Madir leads opposition analysis and has experience with Barcelona, Valencia, OGC Nice and Paris Saint-Germain, plus roles with the Spain and Iraq national teams. Cutler oversees the goalkeeping programme and first-team keepers, having previously coached at West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Former head of goalkeeping Alessandro Barcherini became interim assistant coach last season and now holds the role permanently, focusing on the defensive unit and individual development plans. Michael Proctor remains on Le Bris’ staff, providing continuity within the group.
