Sunderland’s late-window plans have been hit after a key goalkeeping target moved elsewhere, narrowing options around any potential domino involving Anthony Patterson.
According to Sky Germany, Bayer Leverkusen have agreed a loan for Jonas Omlin until the end of the season, with a medical due on Monday and no option to buy. Leverkusen accelerated talks after Mark Flekken was injured, beating competition that included Sunderland.
Sunderland had been weighing experienced cover before authorising any Patterson departure, with Kristjaan Speakman intent on securing depth. Omlin, a Switzerland international with experience in the Bundesliga, Ligue One and the Champions League, was among those assessed.
The 32-year-old joined Borussia Mönchengladbach from Montpellier in January 2023 and was previously captain and first choice before losing his place earlier this season. He has four senior caps for Switzerland, the latest in 2022.
With Omlin off the table, Sunderland are set to look elsewhere in the final days of the window. Any Patterson movement remains contingent on Kristjaan Speakman and Régis Le Bris being satisfied with balance and cover.
Separately, Dan Neil could be close to leaving as he enters the final six months of his contract. The midfielder has struggled for minutes since promotion and was absent from the 3-1 defeat at West Ham after managing a minor muscle issue while a potential move advanced. A departure before the deadline remains possible.
