Sunderland seized on their Tyne-Wear derby win by needling Newcastle United and Sam Fender on social media. Sunderland Echo reports that the club moved quickly online, sharpening the post-match fallout.
At St James’s Park, Anthony Gordon struck early, but Sunderland rallied after the break to turn it round and take all three points. The comeback also extended Newcastle’s winless Premier League run in the fixture to 11 matches.
Frustration on Tyneside has grown, with Eddie Howe facing renewed scrutiny after consecutive derby defeats. The mood contrasts with recent optimism when Howe was lauded for delivering Carabao Cup success, and debate over the team’s direction has followed.
Soon after full-time, Sunderland switched their cover photo to away fans celebrating, the image featuring a banner reading “Eddie Howe’s black-and-white army”. They also posted Brian Brobbey’s winner set to Sam Fender’s Rein Me In, featuring Olivia Dean, a pointed nod to the singer’s Newcastle ties that quickly drew traction.
Newcastle now focus on their response. Howe said he remains fully committed despite disappointment and pressure, calling the Barcelona game very tough and this defeat even tougher. He reiterated that he shoulders blame, shields his players, and expects a painful few days.
