Sunderland have confirmed that highly rated full-back Jenson Jones has signed a new two-year contract.
The academy defender agreed fresh terms after an encouraging campaign with the under-21s, making 14 league appearances. He also spent regular time around Régis Le Bris’ first-team group.
Jones was named on the bench for several Premier League fixtures, signalling clear progress. The new deal offers a platform to impress during pre-season as Sunderland prepare for another campaign.
After signing, Jones described it as a great opportunity. He said he hopes to show what he can do in pre-season and be around the first team. He felt exposure to the senior environment had accelerated his development, with team-mates helping him settle.
Head of Academy John Hewitson said Jones earned the contract by impressing for the under-21s and being a consistent part of the first-team group. He added the agreement reflects the club’s commitment and belief in the defender’s ability.
