Sunderland face a setback after their option to buy Lutsharel Geertruida is said to have expired, leaving his future unresolved.
According to Sky Germany, the buying option, reportedly worth about £19.9 million, lapsed on Wednesday and is no longer valid, there is interest from Premier League, Serie A and La Liga clubs, RB Leipzig want a permanent sale, Sunderland are trying to agree a lower fee, and no decision has yet been made, with the defender able to use the upcoming World Cup after a late call-up.
The Dutch international spent the 2025/26 season on loan at the Stadium of Light after joining from RB Leipzig last summer. Sunderland’s retained list this week said talks with Geertruida remain ongoing.
He made 28 Premier League appearances last season, including 17 starts.
Sunderland have not yet moved to finalise a permanent deal.
