After a goalless first-half at the Academy of Light, the Toon teenagers broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart in the Tyne-Wear derby courtesy of Alex O'Donovan's strike before Joe Brayson doubled the visitors' lead in quick succession, netting his 10th league goal in his last 12 matches at under-18 level.

Kyle Fitzgerald, who joined the Magpies from hometown club Galway United in February 2025, extended United's lead shortly after the hour mark with his fifth goal in his last six league matches at under-18 level.

The Black Cats swiftly pulled a goal back through Bayley Hester but the strike proved a consolation as Chris Moore's side earned bragging rights against their North east neighbours and passed last season's points tally with two games to spare, with United's youngsters facing home clashes against Leeds United and Manchester City next week to conclude the 2024/25 campaign.
