Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light after the international break buoyed by a 2-1 win at Newcastle, sealing a league double over their fiercest rivals. Regis Le Bris has them on 43 points with seven games left, eyeing an unexpected European berth.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats are averaging 46,323 at home, their highest since 2001/02 and the fourth-highest on record.
That places them ninth in the Premier League, above Aston Villa, Chelsea and Leeds United, thanks largely to the Stadium of Light’s capacity.
St James’ Park and Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium hold more, so several clubs post bigger averages. Even so, Sunderland are drawing one of the strongest gates in England and across Europe’s top five leagues. The atmosphere has helped at home, where they have lost only three of 15 league games.
Manchester United top the charts with 73,962 at Old Trafford, more than 11,000 clear of West Ham on 62,454.
Tottenham average 60,939 despite only two home league wins this season. They visit the Stadium of Light on Sunday, 12 April seeking a vital result in their survival bid.
