Sunderland are projected to finish 12th in the Premier League on 50.64 points, despite a bruising week.

According to Sunderland Echo, the forecast comes from Opta’s updated predicted final table.

A late defeat at Aston Villa last Sunday was followed by a 5-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at the Stadium of Light on Friday. A Trai Hume own goal put Forest in front, then Chris Wood, Morgan Gibbs-White, Igor Jesus and Elliot Anderson added further strikes as the visitors boosted survival hopes.

Sunderland were widely tipped for a relegation fight after winning promotion via last May’s Championship play-off final against Sheffield United. Instead, they have exceeded expectations and have hovered on the fringes of the European race despite this setback.

They sit in the bottom half but remain within reach of the top seven with four games left. Opta’s model currently places them in mid-table.
