Owen Hargreaves has urged Chelsea to join Liverpool in the race to sign Marc Guehi after their defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening.
Chelsea returned to Champions League action for the first time in two years, but despite showing some promise slipped to a 3-1 defeat in Munich.
The Blues were bright in the first half, but all three goals conceded were avoidable and came from poor defensive errors at the back.
There was a real sense of frustration for Chelsea given they competed for large parts of the game, but they let themselves down with mistakes you simply can’t make at the highest level.
Enzo Maresca made it clear on several occasions he wanted a new centre back after Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury, but he wasn’t given one.

Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah are solid options, but Chelsea are really missing Colwill, and lack a top quality centre back.
Hargreaves was quick to point out after the game that he felt Chelsea needed more experience in the backline.
“If I think back to those Chelsea teams that won everything, they had Petr Cech, Carvalho, John Terry, that’s the basis of any team,” he told TNT Sports.
“It’s not a criticism, it’s just a fact and I thought the two young centre-backs did okay but we’re talking about [Luis] Diaz, [Michael] Olise and Kane, some of the top performers, it was a big ask for them but mistakes cost them more than anything.”
Chelsea were linked with Guehi in the summer, but he saw a move to Liverpool collapse on deadline day, and Hargreaves feels the Blues should join the race for the Crystal Palace captain.
“But I do think if they can address that centre-back position, even though they’ve got [Wesley] Fofana and [Levi] Colwill, two fabulous players, I think they need a little bit more experience as one of those players.

Former Chelsea star Joe Cole added:
“I go back to it and I’ve been banging the drum for it, if you had a senior central defender in that group.”
Hargreaves replied:
“Marc Guehi, I know he was a Chelsea academy boy but somebody like that, super reliable, you can just pop him in, mentor the young boys.”
