Suriname falls to Bolivia in World Cup Play-Off Tournament

MONTERREY, Mexico — The Road to the FIFA World Cup 2026 continued with Suriname losing 2-1 against Bolivia in the Semi-final of Path B in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament on Thursday at Monterrey Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico.
The Natio was looking to keep its qualification hopes alive after finishing second place in Group A during the Final Round of Concacaf Qualifiers to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Suriname took the lead in the 48’ when Liam van Gelderen won a contested ball in the box to send it into the net.
Bolivia got on level terms in the 72’ through a right-footed hit from Moisés Paniagua inside the box.
A foul in the box in the 78’ from Leo Abena on Juan Godoy led to a penalty kick chance for Bolivia. Miguel Terceros converted the spot kick in the 79’ to take the lead for the South Americans.
Denzel Jubitana struck a header in the 87’ but could not get enough power to get it past the Bolivia goalkeeper.
Jubitana took a chance from outside the box in the 90’+11’ but was denied by the Bolivian defense. Suriname could not find the equalizer on the ensuing corner kick as time expired.
The result marks an end to Suriname’s quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
