Supporters were stunned as losses piled up. Now, as Orlando City SC got everything right, everyone’s still stunned.

With the win over Inter Miami at their recently opened Nu Stadium, Orlando City SC has become just the fourth MLS team to win after going down three goals in a match. The last team to do it was in 2018.

The 4-3 come-from-behind win prepared the Lions to be a team ready and able to evolve during a match. At halftime, the interim Head Coach made changes to the lineup and strategy to open space. This is the kind of game that supporters complained about due to a lack of adjustments.

But with the strong coaching provided by Martin Perelman and leadership on the pitch, the Lions squad applied the mental preparation to the match that they’d drilled on all week.

It’s the mental drills that develop the physical toughness to overcome the deficit Orlando faced in this match. On paper, you should be able to phone in the loss before the game starts. Today, Orlando City is third from the bottom in the MLS Eastern Conference. Inter Miami is third from the top and was at home.

Miami was the leader throughout the game in possession and number of shots.

So from the 39th minute of the match, the Lions tore up the paper and threw the scraps away. Perelman’s game plan showed them how to open up the spaces. They drilled incessantly on how to create chances and recognize those chances.

Players got the ball and moved it toward the spaces while players got there and did what they had to do.

The win against all odds fulfills the finding years ago by a university professor who studied Charles Darwin. It’s a finding that has been engraved in stone as well as copied all over the internet,  usually incorrectly attributed to Darwin. The source is someone reporting their impression of Darwin, former LSU management and marketing professor Leon C. Megginson,  in the 1963 Southwestern Social Science Quarterly.

"According to Darwin’s Origin of the Species, it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives, but the species that survives is the one that is best able to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself."Megginson

The 2026 Orlando City SC squad finds itself in a changed environment. The players and coaches have erased all doubt that they want to survive here. Now let’s find out how well they do.
