Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has had surgery to repair a facial fracture after a collision with Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey in the Tyne-Wear derby.
The club said in a statement that the operation was successful and he was taken off under concussion protocol during the second half at St James' Park, adding that he is not expected to be sidelined for long and hopes to be available again in the closing weeks of the season.
Regis Le Bris’ side came from behind to complete a league double over their rivals this season. Chemsdine Talbi pulled them level earlier in the second half before Brobbey struck in the 90th minute on Tyneside.
The result deepened a difficult week for Newcastle, who also lost 7-2 to Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Botman was substituted in the 55th minute of the derby defeat.
