Hearts triumphed 1-0 over Glasgow City for the first time in SWPL history in a top-of-the-table clash at Peterhill Park. The Jambos now lead the SWPL title race with five games to go.

Just one point separated the sides going into the match, with City looking to shake off consecutive 1-0 losses against Rangers and reigning champions Hibs. For Hearts, it was another chance to test their mettle against one of Scotland’s best.

The win is a significant milestone in the club’s history. Semi-professional as of 2022, Hearts have slowly been narrowing the gap on the professional teams of Rangers, Celtic and Glasgow City. Having finally beaten each of the big three, the sky is the limit.

Hearts

Tenacious City test Hearts goalkeeper

Neither side found form in the first 20, with cagey defensive efforts seeing off any real threat to the box. City’s Kimberly Smit nearly put the hosts ahead in the 24th minute, with a spectacular long-range curve ball which sent Carolina Vilão stretching.

On the other end of the pitch, Lee Gibson enjoyed a quiet first half, with City’s midfield neutralising Hearts progression. In the 35th minute, a City corner rebounded to the feet of Linda Motlhalo, but her shot was an easy save for Vilão.

At the game settled, Heart’s defensive organisation came to the fore. At close contact, City were shut-down, yet dominated in possession and tenacity. A lofty long-range rocket from Motlhalo flew just over the crossbar in the 40th, to close out the first half at 0-0.

Ypema rattles Hearts to late victory

Hearts looked renewed in the second half, with Jessica Husband delivering strong runs up the right wing. Cross after cross passed the goal for the visitors, with no one stepping up to redirect it net-ward. Down the other end, Sofia Määttä’s shot from the edge of the box flew wide of the post.

City didn’t look entirely toothless, just outnumbered at every turn. Their most promising attempt came from Hayley Lauder in the 65th, whose left-footed attempt (once again, from outside the box) sent newly-subbed keeper Rachael Johnstone into full stretch. There was an air of desperation around the hosts, with ambitious shots preferred over driving towards the Hearts defence.

In the 71st minute, Määttä’s tight-angled shot once again forced Johnstone to block. While City looked most likely to draw first blood, the Jambos took their chance. A cross in the 81st minute was headed out to Danique Ypema on the penalty arc. She slid it beyond Gibson to make it 0-1.

Six points separate top four in SWPL

With five games to go, the SWPL title challenge is going down to the wire. Hearts sit in pole position with 52 points, while Glasgow City settle for second on 50. Rangers and Celtic are next with 48 and 46 points respectively. Their upcoming derby match could prove decisive in the battle for the league title, and Champions League football.
