It’s not always about standout headlines or big moments, but Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez quietly put in solid displays as Hungary drew 0-0 with Greece, and there are positives for us to take heading into a crucial period.

With both Liverpool players completing the full match, this was more about minutes rather than attacking fireworks, and the feedback from Hungary suggests they delivered exactly that.

Szoboszlai leads as Hungary secure clean sheet

Speaking after the game via Nemzeti Sport, the Hungary captain was content with the outcome and the performance level across the pitch.

He said: “We went for the win, and I think they came for that too. We played a balanced match against a team in the A-division of the Nations League.

“We agreed not to concede a goal, and we did that. We achieved one win and one draw, so I think we can be satisfied.”

That reflects what we saw from the 25-year-old midfielder, who once again operated as the focal point of everything Hungary tried to build.

The Liverpool No.8 dictated tempo, drifted into wide areas to influence play and remained a threat from set-pieces, while also contributing defensively with a crucial headed intervention late in the first half.

Nemzeti Sport ultimately rated Szoboszlai a 6/10, which might sound modest, but it reflects a controlled, disciplined display rather than anything spectacular.

Kerkez continues consistent form for club and country

Alongside him, Kerkez produced another energetic performance down the left, something we’ve become used to seeing both for Hungary and at club level.

The full-back was also given a 6/10 rating, with his display praised for aggression, defensive reliability and his willingness to push forward throughout the game.

His ability to balance both sides of the role was highlighted, with the report noting that Greek attackers struggled to get beyond him while he still found moments to contribute in attack.

That consistency matters for us, especially given how important both players are becoming in Arne Slot’s system, even as questions have been raised about Szoboszlai from Graeme Souness.

After their international victory earlier this week where both were involved in a more attacking display, this felt like the opposite side of the coin, showing they can also manage games and deliver clean sheets.

Heading into the FA Cup clash with Manchester City, having two key players return from international duty with solid minutes and controlled performances is exactly what we needed.
