Dominik Szoboszlai went from hero to zero as Liverpool claimed a 4-1 win over Barnsley at Anfield in their FA Cup clash last night.
The Liverpool star opened the scoring with a long-range thunderbolt in the ninth minute.
However, Szoboszlai scuffed a ludicrous backheel attempt, allowing Barnsley to get back into the game.
Fortunately, Liverpool had enough in the tank to get past the League One side even though it was an unconvincing victory.
Szoboszlai created one big chance, played two key passes and won seven out of ten ground duels.
The Hungarian won three out of four tackles, made eight recoveries and had three interceptions.
Nevertheless, his performance was overshadowed by that mistake. His manager, Arne Slot, was unimpressed.
The Dutchman said (via the BBC), “I don’t think you should do that in an FA Cup, League Cup or a friendly game, or even a training session. It’s a weird choice.
“I have my opinion about it, but I prefer to keep that to myself and speak about that with Dom.”
Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane also tore into the midfielder, claiming he lacked respect. Szoboszlai stepped forward to acknowledge and apologise for his mistake.
He said: “Sorry to the team again – I made it hard for us. It was an easy mistake, I would say. Football happens, and we move on.”
Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s standout performer this season, setting the tempo in midfield and shouldering creative responsibility while deputising at right-back.
His influence has been evident, combining intensity with quality on the ball. But moments like this cannot become a habit.
Liverpool’s ambitions leave no room for needless risks that hand opponents a lifeline. Szoboszlai has the talent and maturity to learn quickly, and this lapse should serve as a sharp reminder.
