Kasper Schmeichel has been flooded with messages from current and former team-mates after confirming his retirement from football. In an interview with TV2, the 39-year-old said surgical advice had ended hopes of a comeback.
He suffered a serious shoulder injury in a Nations League quarter-final defeat to Portugal in March 2025, and had to continue after Denmark had used all their substitutes.
Schmeichel has not played since February. Medical advice put his chances of a top-level return as extremely small, and the shoulder injury will force him to retire when his Celtic deal ends this summer.
In a lengthy message, he thanked supporters, spoke of his love for the dressing room, the daily work and the pressure, and admitted accepting the end is painful yet he feels pride and gratitude.
He reflected on career highlights, from league and cup triumphs in England and Scotland to captaining Denmark at a World Cup and a European Championship. A decade on from Leicester City’s Premier League miracle, he noted those involved still struggle to explain it.
Over the last two seasons he won four trophies with Celtic. He also expressed thanks to every club he represented, and to team-mates, coaches and fans for their backing throughout his career.
