One of the most notable moves made by FC Barcelona in the recently closed winter transfer window was the departure of German goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen, who joined Girona in search of regular playing time and with the clear objective of strengthening his chances of being selected for Germany’s squad at the 2026 World Cup.

However, the move quickly took an unfortunate turn. Ter Stegen suffered a serious injury in just his second appearance for Míchel’s side, a setback that has now been confirmed to require surgery and several months away from the pitch.

Following the confirmation of the severity of the injury, Mundo Deportivo reports that the German goalkeeper decided to break his silence by sharing an emotional and honest message on social media, opening up about his state of mind at a particularly delicate moment in his career.

The goalkeeper published the following message, expressing both his frustration and determination:

Most of you don’t know me on a personal level, so I want to share something with you. I’m a positive person. I’ve always had this mindset and carried it with me through every challenge I’ve faced, but this one is especially tough for me. Last weekend, the worst happened: I got injured during the match. I had just arrived in Girona, where I was treated with great warmth and closeness from the very first minute. I was really looking forward to being part of the team and helping achieve our shared objective. Now my role has had to change completely, but my support for the team won’t. It’s not just a great group of players and coaching staff; it feels like a family, and from the start, I’ve felt their support and closeness. As athletes, our greatest joy is competing: training and playing. I have to put all of that on pause for several months, as I’ve decided to undergo surgery. I will be back.

The message highlights the emotional toll of an injury that once again interrupts Ter Stegen’s momentum, especially after his enthusiastic arrival at Montilivi, where he had quickly earned the respect of both the dressing room and the fans.

This latest physical setback comes at a critical time for the German international, as the long recovery period could seriously jeopardize his hopes of being part of Germany’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. Despite the blow, Ter Stegen’s words underline his resilience and determination to return stronger when football gives him the opportunity again.
