Records are falling at the 2026 World Cup, and Lionel Messi is pulling away atop the competition’s appearance list as a position-by-position XI of most-capped players emerges.

According to L'Équipe, every pick has at least 20 World Cup matches, with selections based on the most-capped in each role rather than the overall top 11.

Manuel Neuer, 21, became the most-capped goalkeeper after starting against Côte d'Ivoire, and is a 2014 winner. Paolo Maldini, 23, never lifted the trophy across four editions, finishing runner-up in 1994.

Javier Mascherano, 20, is one of four here without the title, a 2014 runner-up after a 1-0 defeat to Germany. Wladyslaw Zmuda, 21, played four tournaments and finished third in 1974 and 1982.

Cafu, 20, is the only double winner in this XI, triumphant in 1994 and 2002 and also a finalist in 1998.

Diego Maradona, 21, scored eight goals across four tournaments, won in 1986 and lost the 1990 final. Bastian Schweinsteiger, 20, took bronze in 2006 and 2010, then won in 2014.

Lothar Matthäus, 25, reached three finals and won in 1990, he remains the tournament’s second most-capped player, for now. Miroslav Klose, 24, once held the scoring record with 16 and is the only quadruple medallist.

Lionel Messi, 28, is the competition’s top scorer with 18 goals and finally lifted the trophy in 2022 at the fifth attempt. Cristiano Ronaldo, 24, has featured in six editions and scored 10 goals, but has not won the World Cup.
