Arsenal have hailed Mikel Arteta as ‘one of our greatest managers of all time’ after the Spaniard led the club to Premier League title success.

Arsenal are champions of England again for the first time since 2004, after being crowned Premier League winners on Tuesday night. For Arteta, it marks the culmination of an epic journey after the former Gunners’ captain inherited a team in disarray in December 2019.

After season upon season of progress, Arsenal are now the Premier League’s top team once again. Arteta’s achievement is set to be celebrated in the coming days, and the 44-year-old boasts the best statistical record of any Arsenal manager.

The Arsenal managers with the best win percentage (minimum 50 games)

5. Herbert Chapman – 49.9% (403 games)

One of the most influential figures in Arsenal history, Herbert Chapman, was responsible for turning the North Londoners into a powerhouse of English football. After winning two league titles at Huddersfield Town, Chapman took charge of Arsenal and led the club to its first-ever silverware by winning the FA Cup and two First Division titles.

Arsenal became the dominant side of the 1930s, winning five league titles across the decade before the outbreak of the Second World War. Chapman laid the foundation for that success, but sadly passed away suddenly in 1934.

4. Harry Bradshaw – 52.2% (184 games)

Harry Bradshaw won 52.2% of his games in charge of Arsenal, during a five-year spell between 1899 and 1904. After several seasons of near misses, he led then-second-tier Arsenal to promotion in 1904. However, he left for Fulham that summer.

3. Unai Emery – 55.1% (78 games)

Unai Emery’s tenure at Arsenal is not looked on with fondness, but only two managers in the club’s history won a higher percentage of their games.

The Spaniard’s debut season saw Arsenal reach the Europa League final, but a late-season wobble denied the club a top-four finish in the Premier League. He was sacked just four months into his second campaign.

2. Arsene Wenger – 57.2% (1235 games)

An incredible period of consistency saw Arsene Wenger win 57.2% of his games at Arsenal, during a reign that lasted 22 years. The Frenchman revolutionised the Gunners during the late nineties and oversaw three Premier League title wins between 1998 and 2004, the latter achieved without defeat.

Arsenal’s move to the Emirates Stadium saw the North London side struggle to compete financially with rivals, but Wenger ensured the club remained competitive. He never finished outside the Premier League’s top four between 1996 and 2016, and never lower than sixth.

1. Mikel Arteta – 60.4% (351 games)

Mikel Arteta has etched his name into Arsenal history with this season’s title win, becoming only the second manager to win the Premier League with the club.

Arsenal’s patience with the novice head coach has been rewarded, with clear progress culminating in title success. Arteta has also guided Arsenal to the Champions League final, a first in two decades and second overall. If he beats PSG in Budapest, he’ll become the first manager to win the competition with the Gunners.
