Portugal international Renato Veiga still wants his long term future to be at Stamford Bridge according to The Athletic.

The Blues agreed a surprise deal to sign the 21-year-old last summer for €14m from Swiss side FC Basel to predominantly provide back-up to Marc Cucurella at left back.

Chelsea were also attracted to Veiga’s versatility given he can play at centre back and in midfield, making him a very useful squad player.

Veiga wants long term future to be at Chelsea

Veiga impressed in his early performances for Chelsea and earned a call-up to the Portugal squad, and after making his debut for the national team he now has three caps.

The Portuguese only started one Premier League game over the first half of the season, but impressed in the Conference League where he featured in all six games of the league phase, scoring twice.

It came as somewhat of a surprise that Veiga wanted to leave the club in January and he was eventually allowed to join Juventus on a straight loan.

Fabrizio Romano stated Veiga wanted to leave in order to play more minutes in his preferred centre back role, and he will return in time for the Club World cup.

Veiga has impressed at Juventus, but he picked up an injury as they crashed out of the Champions League this week.

Enzo Maresca is said to be “crazy” about the Portuguese, although it’s unclear what his longterm future in west London looks like.

However, The Athletic have reported that Veiga does still want his long term future to be at Stamford Bridge, although it’s been said Chelsea have set an asking price of €33m for him.

Veiga has all the credentials to be a top player and he would certainly be an important squad member, but if he wants to play regularly at centre back the opportunities might not be there at Chelsea.
