The Brahim Diaz case – Contract renewal nears while role remains marginal

The reality is simple that Brahim Diaz does not hold a major role at Real Madrid.

Despite being a regular face in matchday squads, his involvement remains secondary. He is often the player the manager calls upon in the final stages of games to inject energy or unlock tight defences, but rarely is he trusted from the first whistle.

Brahim’s numbers last season reflect this situation. Yes, he appeared in 56 matches, but most of those were from the bench.

He finished the campaign with six goals and eight assists, respectable for a rotation player, but far from the numbers expected of a mainstay in the starting XI.

His impact is more about moments rather than consistent performances over 90 minutes.

The curious part of this story is that, despite his limited role, Real Madrid are pushing to extend his contract beyond 2027.

On paper, it seems puzzling. If Brahim is not seen as a first-choice player now, it is unlikely his situation will improve in the near future.

Why renew a player with such a small role?

The answer could lie in squad management strategy. Real Madrid value depth, and Brahim has proven to be reliable when called upon. He stays fit, maintains a professional attitude, and accepts his role without complaint.

In a long season, players like Brahim are useful, not for starting the big games, but for filling gaps and keeping the squad balanced.

However, there is a limit to how long a player will accept that position, and for fans, the decision to renew him is quite confusing.

Are Real Madrid truly planning for Brahim to develop into a key player, or are they simply protecting an asset to prevent losing him for free?

That’s a question that only Xabi Alonso has answer to.
