A cohesive team performance helped RB Leipzig record their first league victory of the season. RBL recorded a deserved 2-0 win over 1. FC Heidenheim to collect three points in their first home game of the new Bundesliga campaign.

Two RBL players were particularly at the forefront of proceedings. Christoph Baumgartner and Rômulo both scored brilliant goals to make it a successful first outing of the season at the Red Bull Arena.

We take a look back on how the afternoon unfolded for our two goalscorers!

Baumi's on fire

Christoph Baumgartner was named in the starting line-up for the first time this season, and it was a masterstroke from head coach Ole Werner. The Austrian attacking midfielder was consistently involved in the game, and was later named Man of the Match.

"It feels great. I just want to enjoy myself, and during the week I already felt I was in really good form and able to show what I can bring to the team. I’m glad I was able to help the side today," he said after the game.

A work of art

The 26-year-old had already been involved in almost every attacking move from Leipzig in the first half. Just after the start of the second 45, he broke the deadlock himself. After getting on the end of a long ball from David Raum, he beat an opponent in the Heidenheim box before finding the net with the outside of his boot from a tight angle.

"In those situations, high and close to the post is always the best option, but it's a hard one to execute. Thankfully, it came off perfectly for me," he stated. He was later denied a second by the crossbar in the 65th minute.

Our number 14 was also always looking for ways to play in frontman Rômulo. The chemistry between them was clear to see.

Samba magic at the Red Bull Arena

On around the half-hour mark, our Brazilian new signing collected the ball, played it to Baumi, and then got it back immediately through a chipped pass. Rômulo beat a Heidenheim player and let fly. Only visiting goalkeeper Diant Ramaj could prevent him scoring his first goal for the club.

That first goal did, however, come in the 78th minute. Yan Diomande played a one-two with Ridle Baku on the right, and the latter's low cross was turned in by the striker using the inside of his heel. Pure samba magic! "I had to improvise. That's the Brazilian way," said the forward.

First appearance at home, first goal – let's hope it continues! "It's my time now – I want to have a really good season here," announced the striker when speaking to the media earlier this week. It seems the foundations have been laid.

Home run still intact

Ole Werner also enjoyed a perfect home debut as RB Leipzig head coach, and one that ensured that a streak continues: Saturday's win means the Red Bulls are unbeaten in their opening home game in each of their 10 Bundesliga seasons, with eight of those being wins (two draws).

"It's clear that we're going to have to work our way into this season, as some things are new and evolving. It was a step in the right direction and an important result," said Ole Werner.

A look at the international break and the DFB-Pokal

It's now time to take a breather, at least as far as the league is concerned. For some of our players, like David Raum, international football awaits. Our skipper will be helping the Germany national team as they kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

"We're going to look to work with the small group staying behind to prepare as best we can and focus on our next challenge," said Werner. That challenge comes in the form of an away trip to 1. FSV Mainz 05 on 13th September.

But before that, the draw for the second round of the DFB-Pokal will take place on Sunday afternoon. The ties will be played on the 28th and 29th October.
