The Italian giants' ticket to the USA was punched thanks to their UEFA ranking over the past four seasons (coming in as the fourth-highest placed side).
On all three previous occasions the Biscione have won the European Cup/Champions League, they have ultimately been crowned Intercontinental Cup/Club World Cup winners.
Their famous Grande Inter side went back-to-back in the mid '60s, while they last won the tournament in 2010, one of only two trophies lifted by Rafael Benítez during his ill-fated spell in charge.
It was a heartbreaking season of near-misses for the Nerazzurri, who finished second in Serie A, runners-up in the Supercoppa and getting to the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Worst of all came in Europe, where they were hammered 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
After Simone Inzaghi decided to depart for Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal in the wake of a disappointing season, Inter moved quickly to replace him with popular former player Cristian Chivu.
Chivu impressed at Parma last season and prior to that, spent six years coaching at various youth levels with Inter.
In a team of key men, it is captain Lautaro Martínez who makes them truly tick, with the Argentine striker now their sixth highest scoring player of all time, while no non-Italian has netted more for the club.
Given their exploits both in Italy and on the European stage last season, Inter come into the competition in fine form (even if fatigue could be an issue) and will justifiably count themselves among the favourites to lift the trophy.
