Gilberto Mora Zambrano, who just turned 17 years old, has caught the world’s attention after storming onto the scene at both domestic and international levels. The Tijuana midfielder is a genuine sensation for both club and country.
Eighteen months ago, at the age of 15, Mora made his Los Xolos debut. He scored his first goal for the club three games later, stealing maximum points in a 2-1 victory over León. Since that moment, he hasn’t looked back. Racking up 40 appearances for his boyhood club, Mora is one of the first names on the teamsheet, with his presence missed anytime he’s not on the pitch.
His sudden rise even saw a surprise call-up to the Mexico national team ahead of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Although he started the competition on the bench, Mora would get his opportunity in the knockout rounds.
His performance on the international stage attracted global attention. Despite his young age, Mora delivered an assist for Raúl Jiménez in the only goal of the game to defeat Panama in the semi-final. In the high-pressure final against the United States, the teenager displayed class and confidence as Mexico beat the hosts in their own backyard.
Fast forward to the start of the 2025/26 campaign, and Mora continues to shine. Scoring goals and grabbing assists, the attacking midfielder picked up braces against Chivas and LA Galaxy when facing the Californians in the Leagues Cup.
Last month, the Tijuana superstar made waves when representing Mexico U-20 in the FIFA World Cup. In a competition where his team would reach the quarter-final, Mora played a crucial role.
In a ‘group of death’, featuring Spain, Brazil and Morocco, El Tri came out on top with Mora scoring three goals and registering an assist during the 2-2 tie with Brazil.
The campaign saw a rise in European interest for Mexican talent, but no more so than for the Tijuana player, who has been rumoured with a major move when he turns 18 in a year. Rumored courtiers include the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United.
As one of the brightest players in his age range, Mora became the latest player to be represented by the super-agent Rafeala Pimienta, who also represents Erling Haaland, Paul Pogba and fellow Mexican Santiago Giménez.
