United star is likely to have an immediate chance to get over World Cup heartbreak
Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo cut a frustrated figure after seeing Cameroon’s World Cup dream dashed on Thursday.
While Les Lions are the most prolific African nation, in terms of qualifying for football’s biggest tournament, they will not be participating at the 2026 edition.
Having missed out to Cape Verde for automatic qualification, Cameroon advanced to a mini tournament to determine a single African team that will go on to compete in an inter-continental play-off in March for a place at next summer’s World Cup.
The first semi-final on Thursday saw Nigeria beat Gabon 4-1 after extra-time to reach Sunday’s final, with Victor Osimhen netting a brace.
However, Cameroon were unable to join the Super Eagles in the play-off final as Marc Brys saw his side concede a 91st minute goal to lose to DR Congo.
Mbeumo played the full 90 minutes, but was unable to help his nation force an equaliser to send the game into extra-time and his reaction to the defeat has gone viral on social media.
In a video clip uploaded to X, Mbeumo can be seen storming off the pitch, clearly devastated with the result.
That said, the Man Utd star is set to have an immediate chance to get over the World Cup heartbreak as Cameroon have successfully qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Les Lions have been drawn in Group F and will get their campaign underway against Gabon before facing club team-mate Amad Diallo’s Ivory Coast and then finishing up against Mozambique.
AFCON this year is being held in Morocco from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026, this means Mbeumo - if selected - will be away at the tournament for potentially up to a month, thus missing seven games in total.
During this period, Man United will have an FA Cup third round tie as well as Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa, Newcastle, Wolves, Leeds, Burnley and Manchester City.
The earliest Mbeumo could return is December 31 as that is when the group stage concludes and the best third-placed teams are confirmed.
