Renato Veiga is still expected to leave Chelsea this summer despite the injury to Levi Colwill according to Fabrizio Romano.

Chelsea were rocked this week by the news Colwill had suffered an ACL injury and will miss virtually the entire season.

It’s a huge blow given how important Colwill’s been, and the Blues now have to decide if they should trust their current options or bring another centre back in.

Renato Veiga expected to leave despite Colwill injury

Against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday night Enzo Maresca started with Trevoh Chalobah and Josh Acheampong, with Tosin Adarabioyo playing the second half in place of Chalobah.

It had been reported Chelsea were considering whether to enter the market for a new centre back, but after the game Maresca made it clear he wanted another defender.

Not long after he made those comments Maresca was seen in conversation with Chelsea’s sporting directors, and it will be interesting to see if the club back him.

There had been talk of whether Veiga could be reintegrated into the squad, given he left on loan in January in order to play at centre back.

There’s now a clear opening for the 21-year-old, however Romano has provided an update on the Portugal international’s future.

“The intention is still for Renato Veiga to leave Chelsea despite the injury to Levi Colwill,” he told his YouTube channel.

Veiga was close to joining to Atletico Madrid before the deal fell through, but there’s believed to be interest from Saudi Arabia, with Chelsea still wanting a total package of €40m.

Chelsea to turn to Marc Guehi?

Chelsea now need to find themselves a new centre back which isn’t an easy task, but the obvious option would be Marc Guehi.

The Blues explored a move for Guehi in Janaury, before opting to recall Chalobah, but they could reignite their interest in the Crystal Palace captain.

Guehi knows the club having come through the academy, and also has plenty of Premier League experience, with any adaptation period likely to be minimal.

The England international is comfortable in both a back three and four, whilst he also brings leadership qualities.

If Chelsea were to pursue the 25-year-old it’s possible they could agree a deal for less than £50m given Guehi has one year left on his contract.
