Earlier this year, in March, Luciano Spalletti ruled out a return to management in the Serie A saying that it would be too difficult for him to face his old club Napoli. “I wanted to save Napoli for last, for specific reasons . Of course, I could never have coached another team in Italy. When you’ve been in that context, experienced matches as a coach, and worn Maradona’s shirt, it becomes difficult to return as an opponent”, Spalletti had said as a guest of Fabio Fazio on Che Tempo Che Fa (via calciomercato.com). But it seems like the stance could well have changed. Spalletti’s relationship with Napoli is a very special one by his own admission. After all, it was he, who guided the club to the Scudetto in 2023, their first since the 1980s. At the end of the season, the manager effectively announced his retirement from club management, going on to manage the Italian national team in the 2024 Euros. To mark the season and his bond with the club and the fanbase, Spalletti also sports a Napoli tattoo on his forearm. However, as per all reports Juventus have made him their first choice. If a deal is agreed, not only will Spalletti be going back on his word, but it’ll also be interesting to see how the Napoli fans as well as the Juventus fans perceive him.
