Sunderland capped a breathless final day by sealing European football, the club’s first since 1973, after a charged meeting with Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland Echo notes they started 10th on 51 points, one behind Chelsea and Brentford and two off Brighton, so a win with help elsewhere could still deliver Europe.

The place crackled before kick-off. Robin Roefs saved from Cole Palmer early on, handball appeals at both ends were waved away, then Trai Hume, selected on the right, finished from Luke O’Nien’s pass.

Hume’s goal had Sunderland sitting seventh at half-time as Brentford drew Liverpool and Brighton trailed Manchester United 2-1. Soon after the restart Brian Brobbey was denied by Robert Sanchez when set to make it 2-0.

Around the hour, Régis Le Bris sent on Wilson Isidor for Brobbey and Habib Diarra for Nilson Angulo. With Sunderland 2-1 up, Noah Sadiki was visibly frustrated after Roefs delayed a release to the left as space opened.

Wesley Fofana then received a second yellow, before Diarra slipped as a big chance to make it 3-1 flew over. Ten minutes were added, the crowd roared every tackle and Gary Rowell’s name rang out.

Chris Rigg replaced Enzo Le Fée late on. Post-whistle, Luke O’Nien celebrated with Lynden Gooch and Dan Neil, Dan Ballard was on crutches, and Granit Xhaka and Le Bris addressed supporters after a four-year climb from League One to the Europa League.
