Premier League clubs tightened their belts in January, but many of them have been loosened this summer as big spending on transfers has resumed.
To no one’s surprise, Chelsea have been the busiest of the lot, while Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have been quick to sign new players ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
By our count, over £613 million has been spent on signings by Premier League clubs in less than a month, although undisclosed transfer fees make it harder to get an accurate calculation.
We’ve listed the 16 priciest top-flight deals so far, which we will doubtlessly have to update over the coming weeks. All fees include potential add-ons.
Leicester City signed Abdul Fatawu on loan from Sporting Club last summer, which included a clause that would see the deal become permanent if the Foxes gained promotion back to the Premier League. They duly do so, with the help of thewinger’s six goals and 13 assists, and coughed up the agreed £17m transfer fee.
After impressing on loan with Ipswich Town last season, helping the Tractor Boys finish second in the Championship and earn back-to-back promotions, it made sense for Omari Hutchinson to return to Portman Road this summer. Chelsea sold him for £18m to help plug the PSR hole they found themselves in.
Aston Villa and Chelsea helped each other out ahead of the PSR deadline, trading players to help the accounts look a bit healthier. The Villans were able to bank £19m by sending young prospect Omari Kellyman to Stamford Bridge. The Blues can amortise the transfer fee over the next five years of his six-year contract.
Another loan star, Taylor Harwood-Bellis impressed for Southampton on their way back to the Premier League, securing promotion via the play-offs. The 22-year-old centre-back has moved on a permanent deal from Manchester City, signing a four-year contract.
This deal was announced in February after Bournemouth turned their loan deal for Luis Sinisterra into a permanent transfer from Leeds United. The move was formalised when the summer transfer window opened in June.
Few onlookers expected Yankuba Minteh to be one of the big movers of the summer, but Newcastle United‘s need to raise funds to avoid a PSR breach meant they had to sell one of their brightest prospects. Following an impressive loan spell with Feyenoord last season, Everton were initially interested in his signature, but Brighton swooped in after the Toffees backed out of a potential deal.
West Ham United have dipped into the Brazilian market in the hopes of finding the next big thing. They found Luis Guilherme, an 18-year-old winger who made five appearances in last season’s Copa Libertadores.
Brighton have not been afraid to take out the cheque book this summer after a relatively disappointing Premier League campaign that highlighted a need for greater depth. The middle of the park is one area they need reinforcement, so they’ve gone and signed Mats Weiffer from Feyenoord. The Dutch defensive midfielder won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup while playing under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot.
11 months after bringing David Raya in on loan from Brentford, Arsenal have sealed a permanent deal for the Spaniard. The goalkeeper won the Golden Glove award last season after keeping the most clean sheets (16) in the Premier League.
It was somewhat surprising when Chelsea let one of their most promising young talents leave on loan to Newcastle United last season, but the Blues have netted a tidy transfer fee for 19-year-old left-back Lewis Hall.
Despite their precarious PSR position, Chelsea splashed out over £29m on Brazilian teenager Estevao Willian – the fourth-biggest transfer fee for a teenager in Premier League history. The 17-year-old has played only 26 games at senior level.
Brentford broke their transfer record to bring Igor Thiago from Club Brugge. The 23-year-old Brazilian could be the long-term replacement for Ivan Tony.
Enzo Maresca has brought Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall with him from Leicester City to Chelsea for the not inconsiderable fee of £30m. The question is: will the midfielder be worth the money?
Newcastle United fans will be sorely disappointed to see one of their most highly-rated youngsters leave St James’ Park, but needs must. The £35m transfer fee from Nottingham Forest got the Magpies over the line with regards to PSR.
Following an impressive half-season loan spell with Borussia Dortmund, Ian Maatsen was always going to have suitors this summer, fortunately for Chelsea. The Dutch left-back will be playing Champions League football again next season, this time at Villa Park.
Nobody would have predicted that Max Kilman would be the most expensive Premier League player at any point in the summer, but here we are. His £40m move from Wolves to West Ham United will see former club Maidenhead United receive a massive windfall thanks to a sell-on clause. You love to see it.
