Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood wants to see an immediate response from her team after they lost to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
It means City remain nine points ahead of Chelsea at the top of the WSL table – and 11 points ahead of Arsenal, who have games in hand, meaning Andree Jeglertz’s side can still theoretically be overtaken.
But Greenwood is expecting to see an immediate response from the squad following the disappointing loss – and she is already looking forward to getting back on the pitch when City host Liverpool next Sunday afternoon.
“This is football, and this is a test for us because football is about character, who we are and what we’re made of,” Greenwood said, according to the official Manchester City website.
“We’ve worked hard all season for moments like this, and it will test us this week, but I have no doubt that this team will step up, and I don’t say that in an arrogant way, but with confidence.”
Greenwood also pointed out that the destination of the league title is still entirely in City’s hands; if they win both their remaining games, they will win the title, regardless of what anyone else does.
“The positive side of things is that it’s still in our hands, and while that is the case, I’m super positive, but [after the Brighton defeat], of course, I’m disappointed. Not angry, just frustrated.
“But we’ll review the game, look at the positives and areas we can improve, and best believe that by tomorrow I’ll be looking forward to next Sunday at the Joie Stadium in front of a sell-out crowd.”
