Malik Tillman is still waiting for his first playing minutes for Bayer Leverkusen. Manager Erik ten Hag gave the German branch of Sky Sport an explanation as to why the American hasn’t yet appeared.

Last Friday, Ten Hag’s team beat newly-promoted Serie A side Pisa 3-0 in a pre-season friendly. Tillman was in the squad at the time, but was not expected to make a substitute appearance.

According to the German club, the American is still suffering from an injury. “A mild stress reaction after training.”

“I can’t say anything about his return,” Ten Hag told Sky Sport Deutschland . “We have to take it day by day. What I do know is that Malik won’t be there on Friday at least (against Chelsea). Has his injury worsened? We don’t think so. We have to wait and see, day by day,” said Ten Hag, who hopes to have Tillman available soon.

Malik Tillman left PSV for Bayer Leverkusen for €35 million as they looked to fill the Florian Wirtz-shaped hole in their midfield. Tillman still has time to recover, as the Bundesliga season begins in two and a half weeks. Leverkusen open the new campaign with a home match against Hoffenheim.
