On 23 December 2026, AC Milan will mark the tenth anniversary of a trophy win that holds a unique place in the Club's history. Before the 2016 edition, every Supercoppa Italiana won by the Rossoneri had come as reigning Serie A champions. That tradition stretched from the 3-1 victory over Boškov's Sampdoria in 1989 through triumphs against Parma, Torino, another success over Sampdoria in 1994, Lazio in 2005, and the Derby victory over Inter in Beijing in 2011. Doha changed that. At the end of the 2015/16 season, Juventus completed the domestic double by winning both Serie A and the Coppa Italia. AC Milan qualified for the Supercoppa Italiana as Coppa Italia runners-up, earning another opportunity to face the Bianconeri after losing to them in the Coppa Italia final in May. 

The Supercoppa Italiana final, played in Doha on 23 December 2016, ended in unforgettable fashion. AC Milan defeated Juventus 5-4 on penalties after a fiercely contested encounter, lifting the trophy against the odds. One of the most enduring stories from that triumph dates back to the eve of the match. AC Milan's departure from Milan Malpensa was delayed for several hours after a technical problem affected the Titan Airways Boeing 757 scheduled to fly the squad from London. While Juventus were already in Doha preparing in warm conditions, the Rossoneri arrived in Qatar with effectively just one training session before the final. That only added to the significance of the achievement. The victory represented the 29th and final trophy of Silvio Berlusconi's presidency before he sold the Club a few months later, in April 2017. It also ended a five-year wait for silverware, making it a symbolic turning point in AC Milan's history. The defining moment came in the penalty shootout, when a 17-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a decisive save to deny Paulo Dybala.
