The secrets behind RBL’s attacking prowess

Last weekend’s win on the Weser against Werder Bremen once again showed the real strengths of this RB Leipzig side. The responsibility to score goals is spread across a number of shoulders, creating an unpredictable offensive lineup that should once again cause problems for Borussia Mönchengladbach at the weekend.

1. Right place right time

RB Leipzig games of late have been categorised by ice-cold finishing. In the 5-0 win over TSG Hoffenheim, RBL scored the first four goals from just six shots. Last weekend’s 2-1 win over Werder Bremen also saw a certain ruthlessness in front of goal, as Leipzig scored with their first two shots from Antonio Nusa and Rômulo

“We’ve lacked that efficiency in front of goal for periods this season. It’s good that we’ve managed to get it back,” said head coach Ole Werner. Leipzig’s ability to win games will be especially important heading into the final phase of the season, where “every game will be close,” according to Ole. RBL have shown that they can both blow teams away, as well as grind out a victory in a close game.

There is one thing that stands out when looking at RBL’s attack: Responsibility doesn’t just fall on one player.

2. The sharing of the burden

With 55 goals (5th most in the Bundesliga), Leipzig have already beaten their tally from the whole of last season. With Christoph Baumgartner (12), Yan Diomande (10) and Rômulo (8), Leipzig have a trio of players to have scored eight or more goals in the league this season. FC Bayern München are the only other side that can say that.

Brajan Gruda, Antonio Nusa, Assan Ouédraogo and David Raum make up the trailing pack in Leipzig’s goalscoring table, having all netted three times this season. The defenders have also been getting in on the action – both Castello Lukeba and Ridle Baku have found the back on the net once this season. One thing is certain: Leipzig are a goal threat from every single position.

3. More of the same vs. Gladbach

Ole Werner will be well aware of the threat posed by Gladbach striker Haris Tabakovic. The Bosnian heads to the Red Bull Arena having scored 11 goals this season – none of his teammates have netted more than four times.

In comparison, RBL have 15 different goalscorers this season and have scored the second most goals at home (34) behind Bayern (56). It could be difficult for the visitors to deal with our blistering offence.

The return fixture in Mönchengladbach ended 0-0. Despite having 20 shots – including one off the crossbar from David Raum – the ball just would not cross the line. That should be all the incentive the Red Bulls need to continue in their rich vein of scoring form and get another important three points in front of a home crowd.
