FC Barcelona had another thrashing in store for Valencia as the two teams faced off in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals last night at the Mestalla. The Catalans came out 5-0 winners in this game, only a few days after having beaten their last night’s hosts with a 7-1 scoreline in La Liga.
One can argue that this Cup game was even better for the Blaugranes, as they were able to keep a clean sheet in this game, something with which Hansi Flick’s team has struggled this season.
As the German coach had made it clear before the game, Wojciech Szczęsny started this game between the sticks, and the Pole was able to build on his clean record from the last game against Deportivo Alavés.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the veteran goalie also talked to the media after the game, and ensured that he did not have any problems with his main competitor in the squad, Iñaki Peña:
“There is no problem between Iñaki and me. We get along very well and are helping each other a lot for the good of the team.”
The Pole was particularly happy for not conceding a goal in this game:
“I’m very happy that we managed to keep a clean sheet, and it’s not a ridiculous score like 5-1 or 5-2. A 5-0 seems better to me. I’m really grateful for the work my teammates did today—they made things really easy for me.”
The Barcelona shot-stopper was also quite satisfied with the team’s mentality and aggressiveness:
“The team’s mentality? Yes, it’s important, but when you’re aggressive in attack and have a clear team organization, it’s difficult to play against us.”
Szczęsny went on to reveal that he was quite high in confidence but is still only adapting to his new team:
“I feel at a very high level in terms of confidence. I’m still in the process of adapting to a style with a very advanced defensive line, but I feel better and more secure each time, and I’m eager to help the team.”
There is no doubt that after a string of shaky performances, Szczęsny is showing improvements in his game. His last two clean sheets are a clear proof of this improvement, and hopefully, he will be able to help Barcelona in the upcoming matches as well.
