A very tough opening match had seen Eddie Howe’s side very unlucky not to get something at St James’ Park, losing 2-1 to La Liga winners and last season’s Champions League semi-finalists Barcelona.

Last night it was Lotto Park for Newcastle United.

Up against the reigning Belgian domestic title winners who got to the knockout play-off stage of the Europa League last season Union Saint-Gilloise.

A commanding performance from Eddie Howe’s players, fully deserving the 4-0 away win.

After two rounds of Champions League matches of the league stage, we are a quarter of the way there.

Remember, the top eight will automatically go through to the last 16 knockout stage.

Whilst those finishing 9th to 24th will go into two-legged play-offs to decide the other eight that will make up the final 16.

This is how the Champions League table now looks on Thursday (2 October 2025) morning:

As you can see, Newcastle United currently in 11th place in the Champions League table, one point off a top eight place.

These are the next three Newcastle United upcoming Champions League matches:

Tuesday 21st October: Newcastle United vs Benfica (8pm)

Wednesday 5th November: Newcastle United vs Athletic Club Bilbao (8pm)

Tuesday 25th November: Olympique Marseille vs Newcastle United (8pm)

A massive opportunity presents itself with these next two matches, both at home.
