Last night’s draw for Chelsea was a frustrating one. They dominated the first half, created tons of chances, didn’t finish them, then allowed two soft goals in and ended up drawing a game they should have put to bed in half an hour.
One person who got a decent bit of blame was Nicolas Jackson. He hit the post, and spooned an easy chance over the bar during that period of dominance. Once again he did so much good stuff (including laying on the opening goal for Cole Palmer), but failed to score the goal that is ultimately his number one job.
On the London is Blue podcast, presenter Dan Dormer defended the striker:
“We have Nico Jackson, who at some points is able to pull three players in, move around them and then lay on one of the most sumptuous assists we’ve seen this season. And then can get into great positions, and just can’t bag the goal in this match and in this moment. He’s our second highest contributor in goals in this team right now in the Premier League in goals, behind Cole Palmer.”
“But I agree. We need competition for Nico Jackson. But at the same time, is Nico Jackson my biggest complaint and problem with this team right now? I don’t think so. Even after I know he had some questionable shots, he was still getting into position, getting into places, and we’ve seen him earlier in the season be able to convert those. So I do think it is a bit of a rut for him that he can work out of. Because he’s still contributing in the game.”
We’re inclined to agree. Jackson would be a far better player if he was a lethal finisher, but he still contributes more than most in goals, assists and effort.
