In the biggest u-turn of the summer, Owls boss Rohl has returned to his job despite overtures to multiple clubs

In a development that very little saw coming this summer, Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl returned to his job this week after months of chaotic behaviour and actions.

A head coach simply coming back in pre-season and doing his job isn't normally newsworthy, but the way Rohl has been about his business this summer certainly is.

Wednesday have been a club in turmoil this summer due to unpaid wages and bills from owner Dejphon Chansiri, and with Southampton, Middlesbrough, Leicester City, RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg AND Werder Bremen all linked with the club's German boss, it felt inevitable that he would no longer be at Hillsborough when the 2025/26 season started.

Yet, in a staggering twist, it was reported last week that despite previously revealing it was unlikely he'd be returning, Rohl would indeed be coming back as head coach, and an expected takeover in the near future was said to be linked to his decision.

That, of course, would not be the end of the drama though. Reports have suggested since Rohl's u-turn that most of the current playing squad of Wednesday would not be happy if Rohl returned due to his summer actions, but it appears that it's something they're going to have to get used to.

Danny Rohl returns to Sheffield Wednesday - fans don't know how to feel about it

On Monday, the first picture emerged of Rohl back in Sheffield Wednesday gear at their Middlewood Road training ground, which was perhaps a surreal sight to see for many.

Even with a takeover potentially on the horizon, it has shocked many that Rohl has returned to work given how adamant he seemed of leaving and coupled with the transfer and registrations restrictions currently imposed on the club, the 36-year-old may be on a hiding to nothing.

Rohl's return has evoked a strong response from the Wednesday fanbase, with some supporters in particular very much confused as to how to take the development.

Another fan wants to see Rohl issue an apology to his playing squad for his actions since the 2024/25 season ended, with another inferring that he is a "snake" for actively touting himself for other jobs.

Yet another Owls fan believes that having seen the picture of Rohl back on the training ground, it doesn't look right or appear to be real life, given what has transpired.

Another supporter would seemingly rather have seen assistant boss Henrik Pedersen be given the manager's job, based on his response - the Dane stuck by the club whilst Rohl was touting himsef for other jobs.

There are some fans that are unequivocally glad to see Rohl back however, with a future takeover to rid Dejphon Chansiri of the club potentially the key to keeping the German happy.

Danny Rohl may have a lot of making up to do as he returns to Sheffield Wednesday

You don't even get the amount of twists and turns we've seen at Sheffield Wednesday in the last two months on a soap opera like Coronation Street or Eastenders - it really has been a whirlwind ride.

Now though, we're potentially starting to see a corner being turned. Chansiri is actively looking for a new owner, reports have suggested that some players and staff have finally been paid their full wages (presumably coming from transfer fees for Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama's moves to Samsunspor and Rangers respectively), and importantly, the head coach role is now sorted with Rohl's return.

But for some, the pain of seeing Rohl actively look for a new job and how it played out in the public eye will still hurt, and it will take more than just a u-turn on his decision after all managerial vacancies were filled to be forgiven.
