According to The Laziali, early June has brought promotion-shaping results, a unique triple-win, and a tribute to Carlo Maranghi.
In 1908 at Pisa, the same XI beat Lucca 3-0, Spes Livorno 4-0 and Virtus Juventusque Livorno 1-0, a unique feat. In 1923 they crushed Libertas Palermo 10-2, the visitors ending with nine.
In 1935 Lazio beat Ambrosiana Inter 4-2, handing Juventus the scudetto. In 1972 they beat Foggia 2-0, Massa and Chinaglia scoring. In 1983 they edged Catania 2-1 in fierce heat, settled by Mastropasqua’s own goal.
With two matches left in 1981-82, Lazio sat three points above relegation, Varese were one from promotion. Despite it being the final home game, the Olimpico was almost empty.
Varese led inside six minutes, Salvadè crossing, Mastalli missed, Turchetta scored. After a probable foul on Vincenzo D’Amico went unpunished, Di Giovanni found Bongiorni, who turned and beat Moscatelli for 2-0 on 14 minutes. Lazio hit back, Surro was fouled by Bongiorni, D’Amico buried the penalty, then beat the near post with a free-kick for 2-2.
After the break Chiarenza struck the woodwork on 48 minutes. On 73, his right-side free-kick cross drew a push on Bigon, D’Amico converted for his third and a 3-2 win. Varese lost composure, Lazio were safe.
Born in Genoa in 1888, Carlo Maranghi played for Andrea Doria, Spinola and Genoa before joining Lazio in 1912. He reached the 1912-13 and 1913-14 Italian finals, later vice-coach in 1923-24. A surgeon, he died in Rome in 1940 aged 52.
