Thomas Meunier has arrived in the North East for a medical and is set to become Sunderland’s first signing of the summer window. The Black Cats are yet to add to the squad that will compete in the Europa League this season.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that the former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund wing-back is set to sign a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light within the next 48 hours.
Meunier came through Standard Liege’s academy, began senior life at Royal Excelsior Virton, then made almost 200 appearances for Club Brugge, winning the Belgian League and Cup. He joined PSG in 2016 and collected three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupe de France wins, three Coupe de la Ligue wins and three Trophee des Champions.
Recent seasons have taken him to Dortmund, Trabzonspor and Lille. Internationally, he debuted for Belgium in November 2013, missed the 2014 World Cup, then featured at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 finals, making three appearances before a 2-1 quarter-final defeat by Spain last week.
He has 83 caps and 10 goals for the Red Devils, the latest in a 4-2 World Cup qualifier against Wales in October last year. He helped Belgium finish fourth in 2018 and was included in Marca’s World Cup all-star team.
A decade ago he said there were seven clubs in for him, naming Torino, Napoli, Sunderland, West Ham and PSG, and stressed game time would be decisive. He ultimately joined PSG, making 128 appearances, 105 as a starter.
In March 2019 he joked on social media by asking followers for a stream to watch Sunderland’s Papa Johns Trophy final with Portsmouth.
