There is no escaping the fact that Real Madrid are heading into a crucial summer when it comes to reinforcing their defence.
The signs have been there for a while, but recent developments have only made the situation more urgent.
The uncertainty surrounding David Alaba’s future is a major factor. The Austrian defender is now expected to move on, leaving a noticeable gap in the roster.
At the same time, Antonio Rudiger may not hold the same level of importance going into next season.
With that in mind, Real Madrid had identified Nico Schlotterbeck as a priority target.
The Borussia Dortmund defender was admired for his composure, physicality, and ability to play out from the back.
However, recent developments have delivered a significant setback.
Schlotterbeck is now close to signing a new contract with Dortmund, effectively ending any realistic hopes of a transfer.
For Real Madrid, this means going back to the drawing board and restarting the scouting process.
That said, the market still offers several compelling alternatives.

One of the most logical options available is Micky van de Ven, currently at Tottenham Hotspur.
From a tactical standpoint, Van de Ven ticks an important box – he is left-footed.
With Alaba potentially leaving, Real Madrid lack a natural left-sided centre-back, something that is increasingly valuable in modern football.
His ability to carry the ball forward and recover defensively with pace makes him a strong fit for a high defensive line.
Furthermore, there is also a situational advantage, as Tottenham are involved in a relegation battle.
If they fail to stay in the Premier League, Van de Ven could become a realistic and relatively affordable opportunity for Madrid, the kind of market opening the club often capitalises on.

Another name that stands out is Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan.
It is no secret that Barcelona have shown a strong interest in Bastoni, but that does not eliminate Real Madrid from the equation.
When a club like Madrid shows intent, it changes the dynamics of any transfer race.
At Inter, Bastoni enjoys stability. He is tied to a long-term contract, plays a leadership role, and is deeply integrated into the squad.
There is no immediate push for him to leave, which makes any deal complicated.
However, the appeal of playing at the Santiago Bernabeu cannot be ignored. For many players, it is a career-defining step.
While the transfer fee would likely exceed €50-70 million, Bastoni offers a rare blend of defensive intelligence and ball-playing ability, making him a long-term solution rather than a short-term gamble.

The third option is Cristian Romero, another defender whose situation could favour Real Madrid.
As reported before, Romero has a special clause in his contract at Tottenham that allows him to join one of Spain’s top clubs, including Real Madrid, for around €60 million.
In today’s inflated market, that is a strong value for a player of his quality and experience.
That said, there are some concerns to consider.
Romero is known for his aggressive approach, which at times leads to lapses in discipline.
While his intensity and defensive instincts are undeniable, consistency has been an evident issue.
Still, Real Madrid have a history of refining players under pressure. The expectations that come with wearing the famous white shirt often bring out a new level of focus and maturity.
If Romero can channel his aggression effectively, he has the potential to become a commanding presence in Madrid’s defence.
