Time to Go – Kasper Schmeichel like the Celtic board is past his sell by date

Kasper like the Celtic board is past his sell by date. Why he keeps getting a game is anyone’s guess…

Kasper Schmeichel, who will be 40 this year, is in the firing line once again after yet another substandard performance in yesterday’s defeat to theRangers at Celtic Park, following on from his poor performance at Fir Park in the defeat there.

The Great Dane, as good as he was in his first few months at the club, has cost us dearly in the past year or so. His signing also shows up our recruitment side of things once more, as it’s no secret he was only signed due to his relationship with Brendan Rodgers who knew him well from their time at Leicester.City. Oh yeah, and he was a free agent at the wrong end of his playing career.

The Scottish Cup final clanger against Aberdeen last May which was monumental in us blowing a treble was just the start of a massive drop in standards by the veteran keeper.

Time and time again he’s been badly exposed and at fault for goals that could have been avoided, either through poor shot stopping or his woeful distribution, the Dane has been a weak link in an ever growing side which is lacking in quality and confidence.

The supporters and more importantly his teammates have literally no confidence any time the ball is near Kasper, either in the air or at his feet, and his decision making is highly questionable as was once again proven yesterday on a number of occasions. He has also become increasingly quick in blaming his teammates for his own failings, as happened when he blamed Arne Engels for his bad pass that gifted the crucial second goal to Motherwell last midweek.

theRangers can thank their goalkeeper in a massive way for their win yesterday, Jack Butland made a series of good saves to keep the visitors in the match before Celtic started shipping goals. Butland produced a number of clinical stops that kept his side in the game, whilst his decision making was spot on, something Kasper no longer possesses, not just yesterday but probably as far back as when he picked up that shoulder injury on international duty in Portugal last season.

Kasper much like our board, is well past his sell by date, and needs to realise he’s finished at this level. Joe Hart picked the right moment to leave, when he was still at the top but Kasper is trying to hold on to make the World Cup squad. He has been the Denmark keeper but come the play-offs in March I suspect that he will no longer have the gloves.

Why he keeps getting picked over a younger more hungrier keeper in Viljami Sinisalo is anyone’s guess. Sinisalo really must now be considered as Celtic’s first pick keeper with Ross Doohan the back-up. Kasper could take over as our goalkeeping coach until his contract expires in the summer.

Hopefully it’s a new manager who makes this call because few, if any Celtic supporters have any confidence in Wilfried Nancy who has made an almighty mess of his short time at Celtic and as Conor Spence pointed out this morning on The Celtic Star, he is set to go down as statistically the worst ever manager in Celtic’s unbroken history.
