Todd Boehly praises two controversial figures for Chelsea success | OneFootball

Todd Boehly was on TalkSport this morning gushing about his team’s success in the Club World Cup.

He was quick to hand out the praise to the players and to Enzo Maresca, as we covered here, but he also had some praise for the more senior figures who had brought the whole project together.

“We couldn’t have wished for a better outcome for our boys, who have done such good work and trained so hard, really came together in America under Enzo’s leadership and his direction,” Boehly said.

“No one gave us a chance to beat PSG, and the boys really thrived and grew on that. Watching them come together over the last couple of weeks in America has been very special. I think the form that you’ve seen is everything we hoped when we were putting this together with [co-sporting directors] Laurence [Stewart] and Paul [Winstanley].

“Behdad [Eghbali, co-owner] and I couldn’t be more grateful for the success that they’ve had, and for all Chelsea fans everywhere. We’re just so thrilled, and thank you for sticking with us. We’re really excited about what the future holds.”

Winstanley and Stewart have come in for some fierce criticism since taking over at Chelsea, not without justification at times. But there’s no denying this win is a big achievement, and that the squad is moving in the right direction. Even the late addition of Joao Pedro gave the team the boost that ultimately got them over the line.

Their job for this summer has only just begun, however. They have a lot of players to sell before next season starts, and that’s going to be a really challenging task.
