Tom Lees training with Rotherham as former Leeds teammate Alex Bruce assesses deal | OneFootball

Former Leeds United defender Tom Lees is training with Rotherham United and could reunite with ex-Elland Road teammate Alex Bruce if his trial leads to a deal.

The 35-year-old spent 2025/26 in League One with Peterborough United before leaving at the end of his contract. He has almost 700 senior appearances since debuting on loan from Leeds at Accrington Stanley in 2009.

Rotherham will play in League Two next season and last month appointed Bruce as head coach. The pair previously lined up together at Leeds, featuring seven times in the 2011/12 Championship campaign.

"He's one that we're looking at. Obviously, he's an experienced player. I've known Tom for a long time. He's been in a couple of times to do a couple of sessions. We've got to monitor him." he told the Rotherham Advertiser.

"His pedigree speaks for itself. We need to make sure it's right for Tom and make sure he's right for us. We're going to see how that pans out over the next few days."

Bruce was due to spend that season on loan at Huddersfield Town after joining in November 2011, but Leeds triggered a 24-hour recall one month into that deal after Lees picked up a knock. Lees made 135 appearances for Leeds before a 2014 switch to Sheffield Wednesday, where he played 274 games across seven years, then spent four seasons with Huddersfield Town. Bruce retired in 2022 before coaching Macclesfield Town and later taking up a role at Salford City, and Rotherham is his first full EFL managerial job.
