Tommy Watson could join Leicester City on loan, with discussions progressing between the clubs as the new season approaches. Sunderland Echo understands Leicester are in pole position, though no deal is yet in place.

The 20-year-old became a Sunderland hero with a stoppage-time winner at Wembley in last year’s Championship play-off final. It proved his final act in red and white before a permanent move to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Opportunities on the south coast have been limited. Watson has 10 senior outings for Brighton, nine as a substitute.

To aid his development, he spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall in the Championship.

Leicester are targeting an immediate return to the Championship after relegation last term. They finished 23rd under Gary Rowett, having started the season with Marti Cifuentes. In June, Russell Martin took over as head coach, and signings have followed, with Conor Chaplin and Alex McCarthy arriving on free transfers and Manchester City full-back Christian McFarlane joining on loan.
