Fikayo Tomori has not hidden the fact that he would like to be included in England’s World Cup squad list for the 2026 tournament in North America, but has expressed his sympathies with Italy and his former teammate Sandro Tonali: ‘I supported them in Bosnia, I was convinced they could do it’.

Tomori ‘sorry’ for Italy and Tonali, but targeting World Cup spot with England

In Italy, Tomori is gearing up for the final five games of the Serie A season with Milan and has an important clash against the fourth-placed Juventus coming up this weekend as the second-placed Rossoneri look to secure their pre-season goal of qualifying for the Champions League.

Once the domestic season comes to an end, attention will swiftly turn to the 2026 World Cup and Tomori’s England will be among the favourites.

Tomori has six caps to his name and his place at the World Cup is far from guaranteed. He was part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the March international break and earned his first cap in almost three years in a 1-1 draw with Uruguay. Tuchel did admit that Tomori’s call-up was largely due to an injury to Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah.

Still, Tomori hopes to be included in the England World Cup squad on his own merit.

“I have hope and the desire to play at the World Cup. I will give everything in this final part of the season to make it happen,” the Milan defender said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Tomori also went on to express his sympathies to the Italy national team and his former Milan teammate Sandro Tonali after their World Cup play-off final defeat at the end of March: “I’m sorry for your national team and for Tonali, who is my friend. I supported the Azzurri in Bosnia and I was convinced that they could do it.”
