Tottenham have completed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a club-record fee of £100m.
The Italian midfielder moves to North London having represented the Magpies 110 times, during which time he scored 10 goals and lifted the Carabao Cup in 2025 – the club’s first piece of silverware for 70 years.
It comes days after Matheus Fernandes became the previous record signing with his arrival for £85m from local rivals West Ham United, which stands as the record sale for a team in the Championship.
Spurs have registered back-to-back 17th place finishes over the last two seasons, and are exercising significant financial muscle in their bid to return to the top half of the Premier League after staying up on the final day of last season.
Tonali said upon his arrival: “I’m very happy to be here. When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one.
“I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.
“I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere made by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season.”
Spurs head coach, Roberto De Zerbi said: “Sandro is a special player and a great signing for our club.
“I have followed him for a long time, as he came through the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia, and I’m so happy to be working with him now. Given his qualities, there was a lot of interest in Sandro this summer.
“However, he was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team.”
Tonali moved to AC Milan on a loan deal in September 2020, making 37 appearances before the move was made permanent the following summer. The midfielder would play 93 further times, winning the Serie A title once.
He has also reached 32 caps and four goals for the Italian national team since 2018, who failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The midfielder brings some much-needed creativity into the Spurs midfield, achieving an 84% pass accuracy, creating 32 chances, and making two assists during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
