Tonda Eckert issued a cautious update after Leo Scienza suffered a suspected groin problem during Southampton’s 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion. According to Sainstmarching.com, the Saints remain just a couple of points off the final play-off place, currently held by Wrexham.

On Tuesday at the Hawthorns, Scienza was withdrawn on 37 minutes, Ross Stewart did not reappear after half-time and Cyle Larin struck late to rescue a point.

Eckert said Scienza would be assessed over the next few days, with a scan planned for the following morning, and he declined to speculate until the results are known.

Stewart’s issue was described as a little bit of stiffness and the decision to remove him appeared precautionary. The Scotsman recently scored Southampton’s only goal in the FA Cup win at Fulham.

Scienza has six goals and eight assists this season, with all but one of those contributions coming under the 33-year-old’s tenure. He has eight Championship goal involvements this calendar year and has linked well with Finn Azaz, so any lengthy absence could hinder promotion hopes, though the severity remains unclear.

With fixtures piling up and an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal set for early April, Eckert may need to lean on his squad depth. Southampton might have to cope without their number 13 in the short term while they await definitive news.
