Amad Diallo returns to the Stadium of Light on Saturday for the first time since his outstanding 2022/23 loan, and Tony Mowbray has sent a warm message ahead of the occasion. That spell helped push him into contention for regular senior minutes at Manchester United, and he is set to be involved on Wearside.
"Tony Mowbray was like a dad and manager for me, we had such a good relationship. I really enjoyed my time in Sunderland honestly, I have nothing bad to say about the club," he told Sky Sports.
"Hiya mate, just wanted to wish you well for this weekend going back to the Stadium of Light. I've been watching every game, watching you do amazingly well at United," Mowbray said.
"I'm emotional, he gave me a lot of confidence," Amad said. "He gave me everything and I'm so grateful to him."
Benjamin Šeško is an early injury doubt for Saturday after going off at half time in Manchester United's 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday. Michael Carrick said a collision with the hoardings aggravated a shin issue, adding: "He's been carrying a shin problem for some time, he got pushed and caught the bit that's been causing him some problems." Amad replaced him at the break and could start if Šeško is not fit, with Joshua Zirkzee another option.
